Washington Redskins star Alfred Morris has a love other than football and it is none other than a 1991 Mazda 626. The 25-year-old running back first set his sights on the car in college when he bought it from his pastor for a mere $2, and ever since then, Morris has been inseparable from the five-speed manual, a.k.a. "Bentley." Last year, a local D.C. Mazda dealer even helped Morris restore his 626, and till this day, he continues to drive it around regularly as a reminder of his childhood, keeping him humble.
"I'm still driving my baby, the Bentley," he recently told ESPN's Football Today. "She's still alive and kicking. I actually did a road trip in the off season; I drove from Ashburn all the way down to Boca Raton, which was like a 17-hour drive, and she made it like a champ. I actually beat a snow storm out. I hit a couple of ice spots in the road, so I was driving about 30, 40 miles per hour - just really slowed me down. But she made it there and back without a problem. Thanks, Mazda."
Now, I'm sure many of you are wondering why Morris, an NFL player with a sizable salary, wouldn't just give in and buy a brand-new expensive car. It's what most people would do in his situation, but according to him, he just doesn't like showing off. He considers himself reserved and prefers not to draw attention to himself, additionally telling ESPN's Football Today, "My car still gets me from Point A to Point B, and that's more than enough for me."
Although the '91 Mazda 626 is currently Morris' main ride, he said he will eventually purchase a new car - he's just in no rush. However, when he is ready, we'd be happy to help him find a brand-new model at Reliable Mazda that he can cherish for years to come.
