Mazda Vehicle

If your Mazda key fob is becoming unresponsive, it may be time to change it out. The battery in there is just like any other battery. It can die. Technically going to our Mazda dealer is the most sure-fire way to make sure you can replace the battery without damaging it, you can certainly do it on your own as well.

First, you need your key fob, a proper battery replacement, and a Flathead screwdriver wrapped in tape. You can double-check that the battery is dead by looking at the warning light on your Mazda dashboard that says "KEY" is on when your engine is off, that's one sign it's dead or dying. Other ways to tell include if the range is falling off or if the indicator light isn't working.

Switching the Battery

Looking at the manual for your specific Mazda vehicle is the first thing you should do in case something is different for that. Next, you need to take the auxiliary key off by pressing on the knob on the bottom side of the fob.

Then, you use your screwdriver with tape on it to put it into the opening there. You twist it in the direction opposite of where the opening is to loosen the cover. Once loosened, you put the tool into the opening that appears on the outside of the fob.

You then push the cover down until you can take it off. Now, you can take off the rounded battery cap, followed by the battery itself. Keep the rubber ring and put it back on before adding the battery if it falls off.

Get the new battery and put it into the key with the positive side facing towards the top of the fob. Replace the cap and the fob cover. They should all just snap back into place. Finally, you put it back into the auxiliary key.
