The all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is almost here and so far we've heard nothing but great things about it. One of latest and most impressive reveals about the upcoming next-generation model is that it weighs a mere two pounds more than the first-generation model from the '90s. A rarity for a car these days due to the onslaught of new technology and components outfitted on models, this weight accomplishment will highly benefit the 2016 Miata's performance.
During the development of the new Miata, Mazda's goal was to make the car as light as the original MX-5 and this recent news proves they were able to do just that. Weighing in at 2,335 pounds, the US-spec 2016 Miata is not only just two pounds heavier than the first-gen model, but it is 148 pounds lighter than the outgoing generation model. The European model breaks even more barriers, with a weight of 2,200 pounds, which is 10 pounds lighter than the first-generation '90s model. Mazda's lineup of light, efficient SKYACTIV Technologies can be largely attributed to the new model's weight loss. Packing a 2.0L engine, delivering 155 horsepower, the 2016 MX-5 Miata will be a huge hit when it arrives in Springfield later this year.
