Back in October, Mazda showed off their RX-VISION concept and surprised everyone by outfitting the model with a brand-new rotary engine. For years, Mazda fans have been hoping to see the return of the rotary, which the brand commercialized back in 1967, and now it's being said the displacement could make its way to a new production model RX as soon as 2017.
Motoring, a popular automotive source, recently quoted sources from Mazda, who claimed a production rotary-powered RX model would land on the market in 2017. According to the insiders, the engine will churn out well over 400 horsepower and feature a two-stage turbo system, with an electro turbo assist being used at low rpms and the standard turbo engaging at higher rpms. Additionally, the rotary engine will work alongside a gearbox that will send power to the rear wheels. It's also being said the transmission will be integrated into the rear axle in order to improve weight distribution.
With 2017 marking the 50th anniversary of Mazda’s rotary engine, it makes sense that the brand would want to celebrate by officially launching their new rotary engine. We're still waiting to hear from Mazda for official word on the rumor, but if you subscribe to our blog, we'll make sure to keep you updated on the rotary engine's future.
