On April 22, 2016, the one-millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata officially rolled off the assembly line. It took 27 years for the Japanese automaker to reach this incredible achievement, cementing the Mazda MX-5 Miata as one of the greatest Mazda models to ever land on the market.
Now in its fourth generation, the Mazda MX-5 Miata has become a fan favorite among Mazda owners. The two-seater roadster is widely known as one of the most fun-to-drive cars available, and it has a loyal following due to its unique appearance and on-road capabilities. When it first debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, no one knew the small sports car would eventually become such a hit in North America, but thanks to positive reactions, it has been able to flourish over time.
“From the first generation through to today’s fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 all these years is due to the strong support of fans around the world,” said Masamichi Kogai, representative director, president and CEO, Mazda Corporation. “Mazda was founded in Hiroshima 96 years ago, and as we move toward our centennial year we will continue offering customers the joy of driving with this model, which has become a symbol of our brand. Mazda aims to create a special bond with customers and become a ‘one-and-only’ brand they will choose again and again.”
In September, the one-millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata will travel to several locations within the U.S. and eventually land at the annual “Miatas at Mazda Raceway” event held on Oct. 1-2, 2016.
