Since the rotary-engine-equipped RX-Vision Concept first debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, fans have been patiently waiting for Mazda to officially announce the return of the rotary on a future car. The company has teased us for months about its possible return, and just recently, one of Mazda’s engineers commented on the engine, claiming he hopes the future rotary will get the turbocharge treatment.
While we still have no real information about Mazda’s plans to put the rotary engine back on the market, their drivetrain and powertrain assistant manager, Tetsushi Marutani, recently told Motoring he thinks the automaker should utilize a rotary engine in the future that will come equipped with a turbocharger.
"Personally, I think that a rotary with some turbo or compressor would be good," drivetrain and powertrain assistant manager Tetsushi Marutani told Motoring. "In my opinion, they require more [torque at] low speed, low down torque. So if we have some small compressor or turbo it would help. I used to have a second-generation RX-7, and it was very quick."
In addition to his hopes, Tetsushi also revealed that while Mazda is still busy developing rotary engines, there’s still no news as to whether or not they’ll release one anytime soon. However, if they do, it will likely arrive in the form of a 1.6L capable of delivering over 400 horsepower.
