Mazda All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

Today's vehicles come with a wide range of features and options. Depending on the model you are considering, one of the options may include deciding between 4WD and AWD. Unfortunately, these two driving modes can easily be confused as to what the actual differences are. We hope this article helps define the differences for you to make the correct decision on what is best for you.

What Does All-Wheel Drive Mean?

The AWD designation refers to a powertrain powering both the rear and front wheels simultaneously for the vehicle. A part-time AWD system works primarily as a two-wheel drive system and, when additional traction is required, switches over to AWD.

The AWD typically functions without driver intervention with all wheels engaged, although some models provide additional driver controls for added traction. Instead, power is sent to all the wheels through a set of clutches, differentials, and couplings.

What Does Four-Wheel Drive Mean?

Typically found on larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs, 4WD delivers power to all four wheels as required. The power is transferred by a transfer case utilizing a set of differentials in the center, rear, and front, providing capacity on-demand to all four wheels.

The vehicle's wheels receiver power and torque as required and delivered either part-time or full-time similar to AWD. The power torque levels can be provided as either low or a high range depending on the needed driving conditions. The power transfer is usually selected as either a switch or a selectable lever.

The greatest traction is typically achieved by selecting the low setting. Conversely, the high setting is generally used for less challenging road surfaces such as snow-covered roads, slick, or sandy.
